Welcome to the AXA Laboratory of Cardiovascular Cellular Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique, directed by Abdul Barakat. Our mission is to contribute to the understanding of the role that arterial fluid mechanics play in the development of atherosclerosis. Using a combination of experimental and computational approaches at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels, our studies focus on developing a fundamental understanding of: 1) arterial flow patterns and their relation to the localization of atherosclerotic lesions, 2) mechanisms by which fluid mechanical forces regulate vascular cell function and cell-cell interactions, and 3) the role of fluid mechanical forces in the performance and efficacy of a host of cardiovascular therapies including endovascular stents and nanoparticle-mediated targeted drug delivery.
