This research project investigates novel stent designs for the treatement of atherosclerosis. The goal is to develop drug-eluting stents that allow for re-endothelialization while effectively prevent re-stenosis.
Numerical model for the simulation of DES
Today drug-eluting stents (DES) are commonly used for treating coronary atherosclerosis. Despite the broad effectiveness of DES and apparent superiority to bare-metal stents, 5% of treated patients experience complications including in-stent restenosis and late-stent thrombosis. In part this can be attributed to the drugs used in DES that inhibit proliferation not only of smooth muscle cells but also of endothelial cells and thus affect re-endothelialization rates. It is the goal of this research project to develop novel stent designs, that at the same time reduce the causes for impaired re-endothelialization and effectively prevent re-stenosis. Numerical investigations promise to ultimately lead to improved stent designs whose performance can subsequently be tested in animal studies and, in the longer term, in patients.
